Was thinking of a purchasing a guitar through guitar center - are there any coupons or discounts you all are aware of that I could use to lower the purchase price on top of the agreed sale price?

I'd be using cash BTW unless I can be convinced otherwise to drop it on a GC charge card...

thanks-

It's rare that they have coupons that you can actually use; the list of exclusions includes all major manufacturers on the ones I've seen lately. Now and again it will be a straightforward 10% (or whatever) off some largish amount, but that seems to be relatively rare. And there are STILL exclusions.

Be aware that if you put it on a GC charge card, the interest rate (if you're using the 6 or 12 or 18 months "same as cash") is piling up interest, even if you're not actually charged that interest when you pay off the account. At around 25%/year. And if you miss a payment (if minimum payments are required on that particular item), you revert to paying that interest rate. If you miss the final pay day by a few hours, you will pay the full amount of interest (at that 25% rate) on your item.

Hey, it's Guitar Center.

Get on their mailing list and you'll get coupons every week.

The coupon says there are exclusions, but on several occasions I've still gotten the discount. Don't be affraid to ask.

Usually the GC coupons exclude almost every major brand. Gibson, Fender, Martin, Taylor, Marshall, ect. are always excluded, look at the fine print at the bottom of the coupon.

I used one two days ago...code:CANDY......and got $25 off (over $250 I think)and free shiping. There's another one for $50 off over $350......not sure about the fine print. Google "GC coupons" lots there.

+1. Musicman is rarely excluded and you can get some great coupon deals at GC. Always read the fine print.

My experience as well... their answer may pleasantly surprise you.

I had posted in another thread about one of their "$50 off any item over $249" which had the usual Gibson, Fender, et al and may not be combined with any other offer exclusions in fine print. The sales mgr let me use it on a new Fender Super Champ XD amp... and he let me combine it with a 20% coupon I had also received in the mail.

Keep in mind, they didn't ask me if I had any coupons... I presented them and then politely asked if there was any way I could use them.

Bottom line - be polite, and ALWAYS ASK.

this is exactly right too many people think that being tough and stern will get you far at gc, but its the polite cool guys that the salesguys are more likely to take better care of. The best approach ive noticed is go in and talk to the crew get to know some of them and find the guy that fits you best (even if its the 18 year old kid that just started) IME most GC salesguys are just guitar players that like talking shop and selling guitars. They all work on commission so its in their best interest to take care of their repeat customers. just my .02

Trade in any old gear, even just a pedal, and they'll knock 15% off your purchase up to a maximum of $500. I was at the GC in Buffalo around two months ago and they said it was a new promotion. Another alternative is not to buy at GC. Walk into a mom and pops shop with cash-in-hand. GC's discounted prices are often still more than the everyday price from the little guy.

Or just buy from the emporium here. If you buy a quality instrument, you shouldn't have to worry about a warranty...

I just got an unbelieveable deal on a snare for my basem*nt jam cave. It listed for $900, their price $519, 20% coupon on top of matching Musicians Friend's $399 price = $320. I'll agree with some of the complaints here about their guitar conditions and level of intelligence, but I've never had a problem with their other depts. Rather ironic. I'd suggest they change their name to Performing and Recording Center.

This. I brought an old junk pedal that was worth about $20 on the used market and they not only gave me $20 credit toward a RP1000 but I also got the 15% off on top.

I also bought a Trad Pro LP with a 20% off coupon. Only LP customs and historics were not allowed.

With both MF and GC, always call and ask. I've found they won't budge on Gibsons, but everything else is fair game. My dad had a 15% off coupon and wanted a new LP. They wouldn't apply the discount to the LP, but they agreed to give him 15% of the price of the LP as a store credit instead. So he ended up with a LP & an Epi acoustic for the price of the LP.

OK. 2 questions...

1. Do the weekly coupons apply to used gear? Is used gear considered 'clearance items' which are typically excluded?

and if not...

2. If i wanted to purchase a used PRS or Gibson, would those used items not be eligible for the discount since the new Gibsons and PRSi definitely are excluded?

Thanks.

No, the regular coupons don't apply to used gear. There was a sale in Jan 2010 that did apply to used gear though, and it was a sweet deal. The "like new" guitars at MF look pretty much brand new. Wait around for another one of those sales.

Hey, it's Guitar Center.

Good post! Yes, I couldn't believe the "exclusions". It's the ENTIRE manufacturer's list, save none (that I could see). I don't even know why the even bother calling them Coupons.
