so, I got my guitar center coupon, just in time, I need some things. I go on the web-site to see what it excludes, which of course, is everything I need to get. It lists about 300 manufacturers (I stopped counting them after 225) on there that the coupon is not good for. I'm just about done with them.

They have a great selection of Gumballs and other quarter treats as you enter at the GC near me?

Others have posted that much of what is excluded, a salesman often can 'make happen' for you, I'd just ask....never know.

Use the Prymaxe coupon instead? Let GC quietly fade away.

Disclaimer -- I'm not supporting GC over other fine, fine establishments... but, this is mostly true. They have ways of dealing - just offer/ask and see what you get. GC coupons are like crappy ads...

People complain about this coupon almost daily for the past several years on TGP. It's been answered and proven that all you have to do is go into the store and get a manager (sometimes call in). Tell them what you want and tell them you want that coupon to be validated. With exception to Mesa and a few other manufactures that have strict rules you can get the deal.

Usually you can go in without the coupon and just ask for the best price they'll do and get things for at least 10% off. One time I got a guy who must have been pissed at the system and gave me my 10% above cost. It was like $2k worth of stuff for $900.

I went into GC with one of those 15% off coupons or such once and asked about exclusions. The guy pretty much said 'we can work around anything but Mesa's stuff'.

Never hurts to ask.

There are only a few brands GC CANNOT discount using coupons: Bose, Mesa (i believe, and Apple (there may be a few more). Just ask for a manager and as long as it's not a sale/used/vintage/clearance item they will almost always do it for you, just be nice and don't be an asshole. You get more flies with honey and what not.

I have 4 by me and although 1 is absolute crap, the other 3 have very decent gear. One in particular regularly carries Bogner, Matchless, Dr. Z, Jackson, 3 Monkeys, etc. As far as used stuff goes, I just picked up a used Gibson Custom Shop ES339 there for a fair price and I've just recently played through a used Divided by 13 they had there.

Not all GCs are the same.

Yea all this exclusions are the coming from the manufacturer themselves, not from GC. A manager with "special numbers" can make it happen with most stuff as long as its not price locked by the manufacturer. That means most major brands (and typically their most expensive stuff) will be price locked, but most anything else is changeable.

I once went into GC to buy a hi-hat stand...I was ready to pay around $250 when I came across a 3-Leg DW 9000 stand with no price on it. I asked the guy at the counter if he knew how much it was and he said, "I think it goes for around $175." I said, "I'll take it." Walked up with the stand and he scanned the UPC (barcode)....it came up $299.99 (special order). He said "oh man, I messed up..."

Long story short, he sold it to me for $175 based on the fact that we made a verbal agreement on that price.

Moral of the story...you push the right buttons you'll get the right price

If you don't like haggling in person, enter the coupon at the online checkout. It won't work for the excluded brands right away, but it will show a link to enter a live chat with a GC rep. Every time I've tried they've given me a "one time coupon code" to apply the discount.

The GREAT thing USED to be using coupons on GC's used gear. Man, I bought SOOO much stuff from them using coupons on used gear.

They stopped that over the last year, sadly. I dont get why, they're still making money.

I've tried e-mailing them "suggestions" saying to stop the used gear exclusion, but they just send some BS reply like it depends on individual stores, which I've found to be BS because every time I have recently asked to apply the coupon they (the employee I'm talking to on the phone) says the computer rejected the coupon and cant be applied. Sure, he could be lying. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Ah well... Guitar Center coupon... for what? (17)

I get the feeling these coupons are meant to get people into the brick and mortar stores. I imagine they have a lot of real estate expenses that many of the online only stores don't.
